The three best Verbier hiking spots
With the Verbier summer in full swing, many of us will be swapping our snow sports equipment for hiking boots, bikes and rucksacks. Whether you are looking for a serious trek or an easy ramble, Verbier hiking spots are some of the best in the Swiss Alps.
With over 400 km of footpaths, visitors and locals have access to a plethora of walks – you’ll be spoilt for choice! There is something for everyone – from the pushchair-friendly amble to the hardcore hiker trail. And every single route provides the opportunity to see breathtaking mountain views and explore the wonderful alpine nature.
But before you head off all guns blazing, it’s good to get some information about the best route for you. Head to the tourist office in Verbier town or read below for Chalet Apartment Rentals’ top three best Verbier hiking spots.
Top three Verbier hiking spots
Ruinettes – La Chaux
Time: 2 hours
The ideal intro to any Verbier hiking experience, this walk provides the opportunity to acclimatise to the altitude whilst taking in the stunning scenes of the mountains and valley below.
Your trek will begin with a gondola ride up to Ruinettes, which takes around five minutes. Once you have arrived, walk along the flat(ish) pathway known as the bisse, next to a man-made river which meanders around the mountains.
Head along the track towards a bowl called La Chaux, where you can gaze at the epic, snow capped Grand and Petit Combin mountains.
Why not stop here for some lunch and spend some time experiencing the views. La Dahu offers a tasty bite to eat, and the opportunity to soak up the tranquil atmosphere before heading back.
Because this is a short route, it gives plenty of opportunities to relax or to get involved with other activities throughout the day. This route is perfect for families with children and dogs.
La Chaux – Lac des Vaux – Col de Mines – Ruinettes
Time: 3 hours
If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, this particular route packs a bit more punch. You will begin at La Chaux and take a mellow uphill jaunt towards Lac des Vaux, where you can watch the skiers and snowboarders doing their thing in the winter!
The ascent is a bit of a challenge, but the views of the surrounding area and lake are astounding – certainly worth the slog! This area is especially magical when it’s quiet and peaceful.
In the summer, you can take full advantage of the heat by splashing your feet about in the water or, if you are feeling particularly brave, take a plunge into the lake to cool down. This also makes for a perfect picnic spot.
After a stop at the lake, continue walking downhill towards Col de Mines where you can enjoy panoramic views all the way across to La Tzoumaz and the other side of the valley. Head back to Ruinettes where the trail ends and take a moment to appreciate the views of Verbier village below.
Croix de Coeur – Pierre Avoir – Croix de Coeur
Time: 5 hours
This route is certainly not for the fainthearted, offering keen hikers the chance to test their mettle, stamina and maybe even their wits! This one’s tough, and probably not suitable for those who do not like heights or narrow pathways.
However, it is also one of the most rewarding routes and offers a real sense of achievement when you reach the top. Think fantastic 360-degree views and fresh alpine air – you’ll feel like you’re king of the mountains!
This is one of Verbier’s most popular hiking routes, offering steep sections, a ladder to climb and even some scrambling. Here you can enjoy views of Verbier, Savoleyres and even Sion. Are you up for the challenge?!
